Dental Bonding with Anterior Composite

Dental bonding is a type of tooth colored composite restorative material (white resin) used to repair and restore teeth to a natural look. Anterior composite is that which is used on the front teeth because it is able to resemble natural tooth structure and can be highly polished. The composite material we use in our office is of high quality and free of BPA.

Dental Bonding for Chipped Teeth: A Long-Term Solution

Dental bonding with composite fillings is a gentle and effective way to repair chipped teeth in children, restoring both appearance and function with minimal discomfort. We can reshape the damaged area in a single visit, making it a great option for patients who may not be able to sit still for longer procedures. Bonding also helps protect the tooth from further damage and sensitivity. It promotes proper bite alignment as your child grows. With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, dental bonding for chipped teeth can remain strong for years, offering a durable solution for minor dental injuries. Most fractured permanent teeth in children and adolescents can be restored with dental bonding. Sometimes, if there is a single fragment of tooth broken, the fragment can even be reattached to the remaining tooth by composite bonding. Larger injuries in baby front teeth may require other treatment such as pre-fabricated zirconia crowns or extraction.

Chairside Composite Veneers with Dental Bonding

Chairside composite veneers with dental bonding is an alternative to porcelain veneers and can be used as a restorative procedure for chipped, cracked, discolored, or abnormally shaped adult teeth. Hilgers Pediatric Dentistry offers chairside dental bonding for minor to moderate cosmetic imperfections in your child’s permanent teeth. It is often done in coordination with orthodontics to first align the teeth, then restore them to normal contour, followed by retainer fabrication to hold the teeth in place. Not everyone who chooses to get chair side composite veneers has orthodontics, but it is often done in conjunction if the teeth are misaligned for a better result.

Teeth bonding can close small gaps in adolescents’ teeth while maintaining a natural look. This may be done if the teeth are much smaller than the size of the dental arch when orthodontics alone isn’t enough to close the space or when the teeth look abnormally small (eg. Peg laterals). The dental bonding resin is applied to fill the gap and create a smooth, uniform appearance, and is carefully sculpted to achieve a realistic result.

This treatment is ideal for adolescents whose teeth are still developing, as it requires minimal tooth alteration and can be easily adjusted over time as the gumline changes. Beyond improving the smile’s appearance, bonding can also help prevent food from getting trapped in the gaps between teeth, supporting better oral hygiene and confidence in a growing child.

How Does Dental Bonding Work?

The dental bonding procedure can often be completed in a single office visit and can significantly improve the appearance of a tooth. We prepare the tooth for the procedure by lightly etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, a BPA- free plastic resin is applied and sculpted into the desired shape by one of our dentists. Once set, the resin is trimmed, smoothed, and polished to a natural appearance.

How Long Does Dental Bonding Last?

Many patients searching for “dental bonding near me” want to know how long the results will last. On average, dental bonding can last between 5 and 10 years before needing repair, depending on your child’s oral habits, diet, and overall dental care. However, since the resin used is not as strong as your natural tooth enamel, it is more likely to stain, chip, or break than natural teeth.

What Teeth are not Suitable for Anterior Composite Bonding?

If your child’s teeth suffer from severe decay or damage, large gaps, or significant misalignment, composite bonding may not be suitable. Composite bonding is more appropriate for minor to moderate imperfections. Molars, due to the high degree of stress they are under, are at risk of chipping when bonding replaces multiple surfaces or cusps (tips of the teeth). Baby and permanent posterior teeth requiring significant tooth structure to be replaced, particularly in cases of severe hypoplasia, are better suited for stainless steel crowns until they reach periodontal maturity. Posterior teeth requiring a moderate amount of tooth structure to be replaced should be restored with posterior composite dental bonding (composite made for back teeth which is more durable than anterior composite, is still tooth colored, but is not able to be polished to the high shine).

What’s the Difference Between Bonding and Porcelain Veneers?

Unlike porcelain veneers or crowns, chairside veneers with composite bonding uses a tooth-colored resin applied directly to the tooth surface to repair chips, cracks, or discoloration. Porcelain veneers are separate shells of porcelain that are cemented to the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. With good oral hygiene, regular dental checkups, and avoiding habits like biting hard objects or trauma, dental bonding can last for many years while keeping your child’s smile healthy and natural-looking.
