DENTAL CROWNS

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, also known as a “cap,” is used to cover a tooth that has lost a significant portion of its structure due to a large cavity or fracture or when a cavity involves the nerve. When a filling isn’t enough to support the tooth long-term, a crown restores its shape, strength, and function—while also preventing further damage. For baby teeth, these are pre-formed crowns so that they may be placed in one appointment.

Types of Dental Crowns

We offer both white (zirconia) for the front teeth through the canines and stainless steel crowns for the molars.  Molars have multiple roots and require the pre-formed crowns to be custom fit (white crowns cannot be adjusted at all). Our pediatric dentists will carefully assess your child’s needs and recommend the most suitable option.

What’s the Process for Placing a Crown?

If your child needs a crown, the first step is to remove any decay from the affected tooth. If the cavity involves the nerve, pulp therapy (called a pulpotomy) may be necessary. The tooth is then shaped to ensure a proper fit for the crown.

The crown is placed and securely cemented during the same visit. Afterward, your child should avoid eating sticky or hard foods that could loosen the crown. The dentist will provide you with personalized aftercare instructions to help protect your child’s dental work.

In pediatric dentistry, dental crowns are commonly used to restore baby teeth that are too damaged for fillings but still important for chewing and guiding permanent teeth into place. Crowns help maintain the structure of the tooth, protect against further decay, and ensure your child can eat and speak comfortably. Parents often search for dental crowns near me to find a trusted provider who offers child-friendly care. With proper brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits, crowns can last until the baby tooth naturally falls out, supporting both function and long-term oral health.

Dental crowns are a great way to protect and restore your child’s smile!
